Have you ever wondered how many coffee cups are tossed in the U.S. each year? Well, Americans used approximately 23 billion paper coffee cups in 2010 (plus trash about 25 billion styrofoam cups annually.)
Interestingly enough, the “paper” cups typically contain only 10% recycled paper. That means the majority of it comes from virgin pulp (picture clear-cutting forests) which is bleached and then coated with a plastic resin to keep the cups from leaking. Not only does this mean that they aren’t recyclable or compostable, it means you’re likely drinking traces of that chemical coating. Mmmm. Just think of what you could be ingesting with the plastic lids on top or with Styrofoam cups.
What’s the solution? If you’ve worked with me as a client you know I’d say kick the caffeine habit for a ton of reasons, but if that’s not going to happen right now be sure to brew at home, at the office, or bring a reusable container or mug to your favorite coffee shop. Klean Kanteen makes an amazing double insulated container which is perfect for hot or iced beverages. Tea stays hot for hours and ice water stays super refreshing at the beach. All in all, you can make a healthier choice for yourself and the planet by ditching the disposables and rocking the reusables.
